Most of us have the health and free will to choose how we wish to live. For those of us who have these, I believe the most amazing thing we can do in our lifetime is to give something of ourselves back. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” It is with this conviction that I chose to take part in something incredible: the Endure to Cure team.
We are trying to pull together $50,000 that will go toward a pediatric cancer survivorship study at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. This study will help reduce awful long-term effects of the difficult treatments that many pediatric cancer patients must receive to get better. As more information is discovered, the potential to improve cancer treatments children receive in the future is great.
I will be running the Chicago Marathon this coming October 9th in support of this cause. I have never run any sort of road race before and could barely run two miles before I started my training. I, like so many, have lost family to cancer and have friends who are currently bravely fighting that battle. It is the thought of these people, as well as the thought of the many I will never meet that inspires me to strive for endurance. When the miles start adding up and my own temporary aches and pains kick in, I think about the children in bed right now because of cancer. These children would give anything to run and play and feel better; this image keeps me running. Please join me in this cause by donating to this amazing foundation. No contribution is too small! Thank you so much.
