In 2000, we discovered that my father had Mesothelioma.
My father was the touchstone for my childhood and my innocence. The one who knew all the answers. The smartest man, the strongest man, calm, confident and my safety blanket. My role as a daughter was about to change forever.
One day, my father and I were in the elevator at Dana Farber on the way to the treatment floor. There were children with cancer in the elevator with us. As they exited their floor, my father said “I hate to see that. I hate to see them going through that.” I’ve never heard my father use the word “hate” before. Even as he fought his brave battle every day, he was still humbled by the courage of these children. Through all the heavy sedation and medication, I got to see glimpses of my father for the amazing human being and father he was.
Although my father lost his battle with Mesothelioma , I believe that there is hope and support for everyone who has been affected by cancer. I proudly race and campaign with Endure to Cure in memory of my amazing father, Frank H. Biele, Jr. I join the ranks of other gifted fundraising athletes at Endure to Cure in the hopes of inspiring others to continue the search for the cure, and to take joy in the fact that we live another day to cherish the ones we loved.
