February 12 - February 28, 2010: Mt. Aconcagua Climb

Kimberly Scott

I believe that one will fail if they never try.

Many people in life will never try something outside of their comfort zone for fear of failure. And many people WILL try something outside of their comfort zone in search of achieving a goal. I put myself into that latter camp. In life, I’m not afraid of failing, I’m afraid of not trying.

I’ve been asked to join in a mission to climb Mt. Aconcagua in an effort to raise funds for the treatment and research of pediatric cancer. Mt. Aconcagua is the highest mountain peak in South America at 22,841 ft. and is one of the seven summits of the world. As many of you know, I was successful in reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro this year at a peak of 19,340 ft. Mt. Aconcagua brings a totally different challenge to summiting in that the elements are much harsher and the summit success rate is much lower. That being said, I’m up for the challenge!

Like many of you, I’ve personally been affected by cancer by knowing family members and friends who have passed away from the disease. I currently have a cousin who is battling the demon and I am fully aware of her pain and struggles in her fight. On a daily basis, one with cancer constantly has to deal with the unknown—will I be cured? Will the scans be clear again this month? If the scans show something, what exactly does it mean? Would foregoing treatment and dealing with the consequences be better than living through the treatments?

Those are some tough questions which I personally have never had to deal with answering in my own life. But climbing a 22k ft. mountain can bring me closer to those feelings. There are many unknowns in altitude hiking—will I be overcome with altitude sickness and have to abandon the hike? Will a storm pass through and force us to evacuate? Will I be able to handle breathing in the thinner air at -40F temps? Will I be physically injured along the way? Just as a cancer patient deals with their unknowns, I too am ready to face my unknowns. And for that reason, I am writing to you today to ask for your support in helping me try.

I’m reaching out to you to consider sponsoring me in my goal of helping to raise funds for Endure to Cure. Endure to Cure’s mission is to raise funds for the research, treatment, and care of pediatric cancer patients. People throughout the world have been invited and encouraged to participate in any event on any continent to raise funds and build global awareness for the cause. So I ask you to please consider helping me to raise funds for this great cause. Any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much!
