My story isn't a sad one. I haven't had to overcome much of anything. I was born into a great family in a comfortable neighborhood. I lived a sick-free childhood. I've broken one bone (my finger) and only had surgery one time (to remove tonsils). I've got two whole legs. An incredibly resilient heart. A roof over my head.
I'd say I'm lucky. Really lucky.
But with my good fortune, I feel it's my responsibility to live life well. Because there are many children that haven't been given as easy a lot in life. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among US children between infancy & age 15.(1) Approximately 10,730 new cases of pediatric cancer were expected to be diagnosed in children 0-14 yrs of age in 2009. Ten thousand children will be dealt a fate they may not survive. And thousands of parents will have to encourage them to live their lives with as much courage as possible, despite even the harshest circumstances.
I am a member of Endure to Cure to raise the funds that supports research of these diseases. I run, hike, bike and walk to live the life outside these children may never get. But the research is working. Although the incidence of invasive cancer in children has increased slightly over the past 30 years, mortality rates have declined by 50 percent for many childhood cancers.(2) Your donation today will contribute to help fully-fund a post-survivorship research study for 2 years at the renowned University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital to help find ways to reduce the alarming statitistic that 60% of survivors suffer from the long-term side effects of their cancer treatments. I invite you to join me in my journey and help make a difference today. No contribution is too small!
