For those who know me, it's no surprise that I've found my way back to one of my life's great loves - challenging my body! Triathlons and marathons are nothing new to me. I started running in 1st grade (insanity), got really serious about it at Boston University, and really pushed my triathlon limits while stationed in sunny San Diego!
However, racing is now different for me in two ways:
I'm starting from scratch. I had to take off 2009, completely. I suffered several injuries, two bouts of pneumonia and had two surgical procedures, one of which was a rebuild of my left foot! My team of doctors pulled me through the year, no matter how many steroid injections, casts and scans were needed! 2010 thus far has been about building back my overall body strength. I did Ironman 70.3 California in March, slowly but surely, and had a little half marathon in June. Because of the degeneration of my left hip joint, 2011 will be my last year of serious racing. Its been a bumpy road towards recovery, but I'm always up for a challenge! Next year I am going to kick my IM personal record's butt, or die trying!
Also, up until now I have never raced for a cause or undertook a fund-raising campaign related to my racing. My racing is now wholly devoted to raising money for Endure to Cure, an amazing project that raises money for the fight against pediatric cancer. My effort specifically will be channeled to help E2C fully-fund a survivorship study at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital -- a world-renowned research hospital. 60% of survivors suffer from long-term side effects from their treatments. Please check out the homepage and see how sensational this non-profit organization really is!
The effort of me showing the run-bike-swim who's boss pales in comparison to the struggles that children diagnosed with cancer (12,500 each year) go through. One in five children who is diagnosed with cancer dies, and pediatric cancer research is consistently under funded! I need your help to reach my fund-raising goals. I want to raise $10,000 between now and Ironman Utah. By clicking on the donate button on this page you can make a tax-deductible contribution online. Please keep in mind that NO CONTRIBUTION IS TOO SMALL! Anything you can contribute is significant to the cause and well appreciated.
Getting back on the train has been a little painful, but I will undoubtedly push through keeping in mind the higher cause that I am racing for. I graciously thank you for your support and generosity!
IF THE MIND CAN THINK IT, THE BODY CAN DO IT!
GO TEAM ENDURE TO CURE!
